Project Overview

Thank you for purchasing a Zollner Models VQ P-61 Cockpit Kit. Whenever I design a new cockpit kit I always design it the way I would want it if I were buying it, I won’t do it any other way! I have literally invested hundreds of hours and almost 4 months into the design and manufacture of this cockpit, you are getting an outstanding value. I can confidently say that my P-61 cockpit is the best one made, not even the plastic model cockpit kits even come close to the accuracy of my kit. This is a fun project but it does take some time to properly modify the VQ Widow, assemble and paint the parts, and finally install them. That being said however, it is well worth the effort and it will definitely make your model stand out in the crowd!  The Black Widow has a huge cockpit area, this will probably be one of the biggest cockpit projects you will ever do! Take your time and enjoy the build and remember to have fun!

What You Need

While the P-61 cockpit is very complete and all of the hard research and design work has been done for you, you will still need some basic materials to finish the cockpit kit. Here is a list of materials that you will need to purchase, or you may have most of them in your shop already.

1.      1/8” plywood  -  Either the light ply or regular 3 ply for the cockpit floors, all patters are provided in the kit.

2.      3M Spray Adhesive  -  I use this to attach the templates to the wood, then you just cut the out. The paper can then be easily removed from the wood floor piece.

3.      Zap-A-Gap  -  This is a great product for installing the cockpit pieces into the plane. I used Medium CA, but whatever you choose to use make sure you test its compatibility with a scrap piece of plastic first!

4.      Sig Micro-Balloons  -  I mix this with 30 min epoxy for use as a filler in some of the plastic parts. I also use it with CA on some of the parts as a filler to add strength.

5.      Model Masters Paints  -  I use mainly Acrylics, some paints like the metallic don’t cover as well so I use enamels for them.  #4852 Green Zinc Chromate for the cockpit base color,  XF-4 Tamiya Yellow Green as a highlight weathering shade,  Model Masters Aircraft Interior Black for all of the boxes, control column and levers,  Burnt Sienna, Olive Drab, Silver, White and Red.

6.      Testors  -  Dull Cote 1260 Flat Lacquer Overcoat. This is used on all of the painted and weathered parts to hold all of our chalk in place and it also helps to toughen the paint and give it a nice even tone throughout.

7.      Dremel Tool  -  If you are doing any modeling at all, you need this tool. It would be very difficult to install this cockpit without this tool.

8.      Balsa  -  Miscellaneous pieces of balsa for filler and extra support of the plastic pieces. Also the fuselage side needs some strips of  3/16” balsa to raise it to the proper height.

Paint and Detail

I would like to go into more detail on the painting aspects of cockpit detail, but there is already a wealth of information on the net already covering this topic. I do cover some of the basics in my instructions, but I encourage you to do a little research on the subject.

I designed this cockpit to be very close to scale, I would also encourage you to study your reference material and add some extra detail. As with any scale project or product for that matter, you have to decide when to stop working on it. You could spend months detailing this cockpit if you wanted! The point is the potential is there to take it to whatever level you want, whatever level you do decide to take it to, I hope you have as much fun building and admiring your cockpit as I did designing it.
